Weather Information

Printable Version

Pilots can access free weather information from a variety of sources.  Phone numbers have been set up to give access to weather, airport, and navigation information.  A Flight Service Station (FSS) is the main source used to access this information.  They can be contacted by phone using the number below and we can receive a “briefing” from a live “briefer”.  Other numbers have been established to give automated or recorded weather.  TV weather is also useful in our planning, but should not be relied on completely.  The FSS is used solely for aviation and is therefore more useful for pre-flight planning. The internet also provides many excellent sources for aviation weather information.  For the first part of your training, you will need a minimum of a 3,000 foot ceiling, and 5 miles of visibility in order to practice maneuvers safely.  Wind will also play a part in the decision and for the first part of training.  Winds in excess of 20 knots are considered unfavorable because of the hindrances they cause for the learning process.  As your skills develop, your flight instructor may elect to fly with you in higher winds.  Some lessons may be substituted for others when the weather is not practical for the original lesson, so your flight instructor should be contacted when the weather conditions are marginal:  (i.e. Radio navigation may be substituted for landing practice in high winds).  After calling the number(s) below, if the weather conditions are less than adequate, call your flight instructor and discuss the decision with him.
