EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

ENGINE FAILURE

Printable Version

 1. AVIATE-  establish best glide speed.  65 mph  for the C150

 2. NAVIGATE-  decide on a landing site. Squawk 7700 in transponder.  If an airport is within glide range distance, turn towards it.  If not, then pick a field or open space that will accommodate the landing distance of the aircraft you are flying and turn towards that point.  Open fields are good landing sights, but beware of power lines, fences, livestock, hay bales, etc.  Use your best judgment to decide on a site and then stick with that decision unless it is absolutely necessary to deviate.

 3. CHECKLIST- calmly perform the engine out checklist for the aircraft you are flying.  This checklist should be memorized because there will not be time to read the checklist during the emergency.  The checklist for the C150 is a flow type.

            1. Fuel selector - on

            2. Mixture - full rich

            3. Throttle - adjust for best running

            4.  Carburetor heat - on

            5.  Magnetos - check left, then right, then both

            6.  Primer - check locked

 4. COMMUNICATE- If talking to ATC, then announce emergency on the frequency assigned. If not talking to ATC then  broadcast “mayday, mayday, mayday” on frequency 121.5.

 5. SECURE-  prepare the aircraft for the landing.  Brief the passengers to secure seatbelts.  Perform the checklist in reverse, shutting off the fuel and magnetos.

            1.  Magnetos - off

            2.  Mixture - cut off

            3.  Throttle - cut off

            4.  Fuel selector - off

            5.  Master switch - off
