C-172 Short Field Take -Off & Landings

SHORT FIELD TAKE-OFF

FLAPS - with obstacle no flaps, without obstacle 10 degrees flaps.

TAXI - absolute end of runway.

BRAKES - on and apply full power, let RPM's build up.

BRAKES - release, accelerate and rotate at 66 mph.

WITH OBSTACLE - climb at 66 mph to 100 AGL, then gently lower pitch to 80 mph.

WITHOUT OBSTACLE - climb at 80 mph, then retract flaps.

 

SHORT FIELD LANDING

FLAPS - 40 degrees, approach speed 60 mph.

FLAPS - windy or gusty, 30 degrees, approach speed 65 mph.

This is a power on approach use power to control glide-path.

After touchdown, power idle, flaps up, brakes apply, elevator aft.

 

SOFT FIELD TAKE-OFF

FLAPS - with obstacle no flaps, without obstacle 10 degrees flaps.

TAXI - with power as necessary and elevator aft.

BRAKES - only when necessary.

TAXI - to end of runway and immediately apply power when lined up on runway do not stop and keep the nose wheel up out of the soft surface.

WITH OBSTACLE - when aircraft lifts off climb at 66 mph to 100 AGL, then gently lower pitch to 80 mph.

WITHOUT OBSTACLE - when aircraft lifts off remain in ground effect till 80 mph, then climb at 80 mph and slowly retract flaps.

 

SOFT FIELD LANDING

FLAPS - 30 degrees, approach speed 65 - 70 mph.

FLAPS - windy or gusty, 20 degrees, approach speed 70 - 75 mph.

*This is also a power on approach, use power to control glide path, leave some power in on landing to reduce the sink rate and land with minimum sink.  Keep the power in and elevator aft to keep as much weight off the wheels as possible.
